The San Francisco Peaks are home to the only alpine tundra environment in Arizona (wikipedia.org).

San Francisco Peak is a name for this former volcanic center in the middle of the northern Arizona plateau country. In fact, the central peak is Humphreys Peak and is the highest point in Arizona. This small range is known for having an unusually wide set of climate zones on its flanks, with arctic species on the top and various forested zones around its base. In this October picture, aspens on the upper slopes have turned yellow. The range was glaciated during the Pleistocene. San Francisco Peak marks the traditional western boundary of the Navajo region.
